This design is based on the design of the San Benito that Joan of Arc was wearing when she was burned at the stake. A San Benito was a garnment that was imposed by the inquisition upon those who were sentenced to be burned alive. The devils painted on it symbolized the fate that awaited the condemned in the flames of hell.
